Schema.org Markup Generator
Structured data is how a page describes itself to a search engine. This generator produces valid JSON-LD for the types that appear most often on a documentation site.
How this tool works
Structured data is a vocabulary that tells a machine what a page is, and it is the only way to say anything precise about a thing. A Product, a Dataset, an FAQ, an Article, a LocalBusiness: each says something different, and each is matched by a rich result in a search engine. This generator builds the markup from the values you supply and shows it as the JSON-LD a crawler would read. It is deliberately type-aware, because the most common error is not malformed JSON but valid JSON that describes the wrong thing: a review schema on a page with no reviews, an FAQ schema whose answers are not on the page, or an Offer with a price that is not the price. A rich result that Google cannot verify is a rich result that does not appear.
When to use it
- Add structured data to a page for a specific rich result
- Check an existing block of markup against the schema requirements
- Understand which type describes what a page actually contains
- Produce valid JSON-LD without hand-writing the escaping
Frequently asked questions
What is the most common structured data error?
Valid markup that does not match the page. A FAQ schema whose questions are not on the page, or a review schema with no reviews on the page, is ignored.
Does adding schema markup improve ranking?
Not directly. It makes a rich result possible, and a rich result gets more clicks, which is worth more than the position would have been.
JSON-LD or Microdata?
JSON-LD. It is a single block, it is not affected by the page's markup, and it does not interfere with the rendering.
What is the safest schema type to start with?
Organization on the home page and BreadcrumbList on the interior pages. Both are easy to get right and both are widely consumed.
Can I mark up content that is not visible on the page?
No. Google requires the marked-up content to be visible on the page, and a mismatch can earn a manual action.
How many types should a page carry?
Only the ones that describe it. Every irrelevant type adds noise, and a page carrying five schemas generally deserves one or two.
